Abaya Collective was a dream that began when I first visited Qatar in 2018. I was taken aback by the beauty and sophistication of the Qatari women, whom I refer to as The Queens. Everywhere I went I couldn’t help but admire the way they wore their abayas and how they seemed to walk with such confidence, as if they were informing the world – “here we are, here is what we stand for and we will walk through this world with grace and ease”. Every abaya they wear is beautiful yet modest. They pay particular attention to their personal grooming and manners. They are refined. I have travelled to Qatar many times since then and every time I return home to Australia, I cannot help but feel that as Australian Muslim women and perhaps elsewhere in the world, we have been overlooking the importance of refinement in our spiritual practice. Abaya Collective is my offering to Muslim women, wherever you might be, to return to the Islamic ideal of refinement. I hope you like what we have created and InshaAllah there is more to come.
